X) Title: Water, Water, where for art thou water Summary: This lesson examines the sources of salt and fresh water. The differences between ponds and lakes are determined. As well as the differences between rivers and streams. I will have the students research and identify a body of water in the east coast. In the project they will choose a body of water describe its characteristics and the environment around it . They will also identify the body of water by explaining the type of water it is, what type of body of water it is, describe the possible sources of erosion and weathering that may occur in that environment and in what way the erosion may be managed. The students will then create a poster board or other method of visual respresentation which describes what they have learned about the water they researched. The students will present the information they collected to the class. This lesson makes connections to the students environment and build on information they have learned during the unit about weathering, erosion, the water cycle, and the rock cycle. Students may work in pairs on the project Objectives:
Students will describe the differences between different bodies of water
Students will create a visual representation of their body of water
Students will explain the different characteristics of their body of water
Students will apply they knowledge they have obtained about erosion and weathering to their body of water.
Materials:
computers for research should be available to the students
colored pencils ( if they want to map out their visual)
blank paper (if they want to map out or plan their visual
Instruction: Opening:
Open with a picture of Narragansett beach
ask the students what type of water is pictured here.
ask them if they had any ideas about what type of weathering or erosion would occur here.
Explain to them after a short review of bodies of water that they will be brainstorming and researching a body of water in the North East in a similar manner.
timing = 5-10 minutes
Middle:
Review the difference between salt and fresh water with the students. Ask them if there are any other type of water in nature? (brackish)
Review the difference between rivers and streams as well as lakes and ponds.
Explain to the students that they will be required to research a body of water and the topics that should be included would be,
Name of the body of water
what type of water it is
where it is located
description of the environment it is located in
what is the climate
Would there be much weathering there? what kinds of weathering would occur?
What type of erosion would be prevalent and why?
Explain to the students that they must make a visual representation of the body of water including all of the afore mentioned information. That could be in the form of a poster, a powerpoint anything really as long as it included the required information.
Explain to the students they will have till 5 minutes before the end of the period to work on this project and they rest of the project would be done outside of the classroom.
timing= 25-30 minutes
Closing:
Have the students return to their seats and put clean up their areas.
Explain that the project will be due in a week and that the students should have plenty of time to finish the project outside of the classroom
Explain that you will be available after school during your regular after school hours if any students would need help
